The Food Forever Fund...

Food Runners successfully completed a $3.5 million capital campaign to build the building and broke ground in 2003. This new building, completed in 2004, is more than just bricks and mortar; it is a commitment to provide ongoing support for the area's hungry.

Food Runners means more than the sum of its parts. For the first time, the Food Shuttle is able to unload tractor-trailers full of surplus food onto docks to be stored in walk-in freezers. Meals on Wheels is able to have food cooked in its own facility instead of relying on a caterer. Food Runners will be able to transform large quantities of fresh produce into nutritious meals that can be delivered to hungry people who may not be able to cook for themselves.

Currently, Meals on Wheels volunteers provide 1,200 hot meals and 150 frozen meals each day in Wake County. Last year the Food Shuttle delivered 5 million pounds of food to soup kitchens and shelters in seven counties. The building has enabled them to dramatically increase service capacity, eliminating waiting lists and more than doubling the number of people served in the next five years.

The Food Forever Campaign, the last phase of this campaign, is helping to operate and sustain the new facility for the first few years to ensure stability. Food Runners and its partners are utilizing the building to feed the elderly, teach new job skills to the homeless, and provide food for children and working families through hundreds of local agencies, thereby helping to make our community a better place for all our citizens.
